Dr. Jill Became a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry.  What Exactly Does that Mean?

67399933_10219615905930502_5118837865568010240_nOn Saturday, July 20, Dr. Jill was awarded a Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry at the organization’s annual scientific meeting in Connecticut.  Only about six percent of dentists in the United States and Canada achieve this prestigious distinction.  This award places Dr. Jill among the top six percent of general dentists in the country!

How Does a Dentist Become a Fellow?

This is not an award that is randomly assigned!  It is definitely earned.  Members of the Academy of General Dentistry can undergo the process of application to a Fellowship by meeting the following requirements:

  • Completing at least 500 hours of continuing education in various areas of dentistry.
  • All 500 hours must be accredited by the Academy, and a minimum of 350 hours must be completed in live courses.
  • Passing a difficult, comprehensive exam covering all areas of general dentistry

Why the AGD?

67089699_10219616334421214_4624296308696416256_oThe Academy of General Dentistry appeals to dentists committed to excellent dentistry and lifelong learning.  Unlike many organizations who limit their scope to a single realm of dentistry (like cosmetics or implants), the Academy of General Dentistry provides education and resources for every aspect of dentistry that a general or family dentist encounters in everyday practice.

While dental specialists, like orthodontists, have a board certification process that “proves” their advanced education and expertise, general dentists do not.  The Fellowship award by the Academy of General Dentistry allows general dentists to distinguish themselves from their colleagues, showing that continued advanced education and excellent patient care skills are a top priority.
